The Only Immortal Animal on Earth

Turritopsis nutricula
Have you ever wondered what would happen if our life cycles were reversed, that is if we were born old and died young? Well, there’s one animal that comes close and has achieved immortality in the process, just to top it off. Meet the Turritopsis nutricula, a small saltwater animal or hydrozoan related to jellyfish and corals.
Like most jellyfish, Turritopsis nutricula undergoes two distinct stages in its life cycle: The polypoid or immature stage, when it’s just a small stalk with feeding tentacles; and the medusa or mature stage when the only 1mm-long polyps asexually produce jellyfish.

Turritopsis nutricula in its aptly named medusa form with a bright red stomach
A jellyfish’s lifespan usually ranges from somewhere between a few hours for the smallest species to several months and rarely to a few years for the bigger species. How does the only 4-5 mm long Turritopsis nutricula (let’s call it T’nut) manage to beat the system?
Well, T’nut is able to transform between medusa and polyp stage, thereby reverting back from mature to immature stage and escaping death. The cell process is called transdifferentiation, when non-stem cells either transform into a different type of cell or when an already differentiated or specialised stem cell creates cells outside this specialised path.

The polyp state of Turritopsis rubra, long synonymised with T’nut
T’nut requires tissue from both the jellyfish bell surface and the circulatory canal system for its transdifferentiation. This switching of cell roles is not unusual and can be seen in many animals and humans, but usually only when parts of an organ regenerate. In T’nut’s case, reverting back to an immature state is part of its regular life cycle.
In its medusa form, Turritopsis nutricula is bell-shaped and about 4-5 mm in diameter. Young specimens will be only 1 mm in diameter and have eight tentacles to start out with but can have between 80 and 90 as adults.

Specimen with a yellow body
Turritopsis nutricula most likely originated in the Caribbean but can now be found in the temperate to tropical regions in all of the world's oceans, spreading further through the ballast water that ships discard in ports. According to Dr. Maria Pia Miglietta from the Smithsonian Tropical Marine Institute: "We are looking at a worldwide silent invasion."

A drawing of various Tuatara species; T’nut is No. 18
Silent invasion? Possibly, but while Turritopsis nutriculae may be biologically immortal, they are surely not invincible. Especially in their immature stage, they are susceptible to predators and diseases and many die before they even reach jellyfish stage. Still, they are to date the only known animal capable of reverting to an earlier, immature stage.

Thoughts On Future of The Web - GujaratiKanudo

The web is changing. It’s evolving rapidly, specially as of late. It’s becoming more social, localized and real-time. Instant and distributed is the new trend. It’s adapt or loose the battle for other web properties if they want to maintain their popularity. By now, you probably heard about new redesign of twitter, one that happened sometime yesterday. I think this is where future of the web and information is heading. Why am I writing all this? It got me thinking how maintaining this website alone won’t be possible anytime soon. We need to follow the trend, and evolve as well. Think I should put more work in connecting and hiring professional individuals, and re-architect our website with more sophisticated functions and design. What do you think? What do you think is the future of Mighty Optical Illusion? Where do you see us head next (design, functionality, distribution…)? Which things you like here, and which ones you don’t? Am not sure if all my thoughts relate to you, still here’s a nice set of Impossible Windows by GujaratiKanudo.. just to keep up with the illusion trend ;)

Rotating Spiral Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

This is double illusion as well! First thing you’ll notice is that this “spiral” is moving in some strange way. It appears it is somehow rotating, even though it is actually standing very still. Your eye movement across the image makes the illusion of movement. Like Borat would say, “Niicee!”. The second illusion is that this “spiral” is actually no spiral at all! It is made of two concentric circles (two circles with same center). There are similar illusions inside our animations category. Check especially for: moving snakes, original spiral illusion, wheel of fortune, wheel of confusion and pinwheel. Again, the wisely implemented colors give the illusion of spiral. All this together gives us unique experience, while in fact it’s pretty simple art. Be sure to open this picture full size to get better effect.

Garage Door Face Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

I realize I might have given insufficient explanation in our previous article, as I thought it was more than obvious the illusion was animated .gif file. Moreover it was required for it to loop between two frames, in order to work properly. If you haven’t fully understood the way it works, be sure to read some of the comments other visitors left, explaining it in more details.

I understand how my English can sometimes sound crippled, specially in situations that require in-depth explaining. So I apologize once again, but also thank you for all of the warm feedback regarding my diploma!

Yellow Liliac Chaser Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

Except writing entirely about optical illusions, you may have noticed that sometimes I share my reflections on every day life as well. Few posts ago I shared my view on similar flicks that hit the cinemas, and when the Americans were deciding who their new leader shall be, I did the same. Does this bother you? If I find some open source scripts to add polls to my posts, I’ll gladly do so. I’d really love to hear what you think about this. Unfortunately all of the free voting widgets have that spammy look, accompanied with dozen of unnecessary links that come along with it. I saw some scenes from the new X Men movie (Origins of Wolverine) that hit the torrents, even before the movie was entirely finished and released. These sort of things happen, and the industry just can’t deal with it. I believe these releases entirely ruin the watching experience. It was so funny seeing Wolverine climbing the 3D model of an unfinished building, hanging from some un-erased cables supporting him. If you’re in for a laugh, try and find some screenshots that float around the net. In the mean time, enjoy this modified version of Pink Lilac Chaser. If you concentrate on the black cross in the center of the animation, the spinning dot will aggressively turn to yellow. Can you see it?

Learn to live bY Mehul Patel - A Slide

"Be happy while you're living, for you're a long time dead." - Scottish Proverb Learn to live bY Mehul Patel
Slide by MEHUL PATEL

Everyone says, "How the time flies." The days go by and they are years, and the years finally become our whole life. Each daily portion can be wasted, or it can be a pleasure, before it is gone forever. If a bedtime review of the day concludes that we were too stressed, too busy, didn't accomplish anything, didn't have any fun, then it has been another lost piece of precious life.

Breathtaking Photos of “Play with Fire”

“Don’t play with fire!” that’s what we have been told since we were kids. Maybe this is why we could be easily shocked by the performance of the play of fire. We can’t help wondering: does it burn the performers’ mouths or lips? Does it hurt? The combination of the beauty of the scene and the wonders in our head makes the performance.

Crossing Circles Illusion

Is it only me, or do these circles composed of black and white squares, seem to cross-over? You be the judge! It worked for me… Amazing. Similar one here. I’m still not sure how these illusions work, and boy, we had many of them here in the past. Another version would be the one, where the concentric circles seem to make a spiral. Be sure to check more of these in seemingly bent category. Mind can be though to deceive, but that isn’t the case with this website. Enjoy and don’t go delusional!

Three Figurines Optical Illusion Video - GujaratiKanudo

You have got to check this animation out! It has potential to overthrow the “Little Dragon Illusion” of the throne as one of the best illusions ever. In short concave figures give the impression they are actually convex (bump out). Same principle we saw in Einstein’s Hollow Face and Magnificent Buddha. You can find few more inside Videos category, but I bet this one is the best for now. The video attached below is made in Flash, and takes some time to load (9 MB). If you have trouble seeing it, you can go to this YouTube link, and see it there. Enjoy! P.S. My head (eyes) still hurt!

Backup and Restore Firefox Profiles Easily

Transferring a Firefox profile from one computer to another can be a pain if you have to do it manually. Sure, you can locate the Firefox profile directory and then copy it to the new machine, but then it doesn’t automatically show up in the list, etc.

A much easier method for backing up and restoring profiles is to just use the MozBackup application to backup and restore the profiles to a single backup file.
When you launch the application, you can choose to either backup or restore the profile. You can choose which profile to back up, and what file to save it as.

You can restore the profile on another computer by simply launching the MozBackup application on that computer, and then selecting the profile to restore to, and chosing the backup file that you copied from the first computer:

How to Backup and Restore Firefox Passwords List - GujaratiKanudo

Somebody recently wrote in asking how to backup the list of saved passwords in Firefox into a spreadsheet, so I’m writing the solution here for everybody: All you need is the Password Exporter extension.
If you’d like to backup your entire profile including passwords, cookies, bookmarks, etc, you can use this method.

Open up the Add-ons screen and find Password Exporter in the list, where you can click the Options button to bring up the Import/Export Passwords dialog.

Disappearing Dots Poster - GujaratiKanudo

Here’s one you probably missed seeing in the wild! Check out what Oxy did as part of their “Disappearing Dots” campaign. Sure, the effect has been more than re-re-cycled on our site, but the idea behind it qualifies it as very smart optical illusion advertising! Old-timers will probably remember how Ariel did something similar back in the old days… Anyway, focus on the bottle for half a minute, and see the surrounding dots completely disappear! When you’re done, you might want to check similar ones (links in this text and color adapting category).

7 Gadgets That Won’t Be Around In 2020 - GujaratiKanudo

Which Tech Gadgets Will Be Phased Out This Decade?

Hindsight may always be 20-20, but you don’t need particularly great foresight to know many of the gadgets on today’s market won’t be around in 2020 given how quickly the tech industry keeps changing. In the first half of the 2000s, retailers were buzzing about the prospects of MP3 players and netbooks, but by the end of the decade, those products had largely been replaced by smartphones and tablets.
As tempting as it may be to imagine otherwise, some of the gadgets you may rely on most right now will likely suffer the same fate and be killed off or made obsolete by the end of this decade. Sure, you may still be able to find these products for sale in certain niche stores, but they will no longer be produced for a mass-market audience.
“You can still find and buy VCRs and there are people still using mainframes from 1992, so it’s not like this stuff disappears forever,” says Stephen Baker, an industry analyst at the NPD Group. Baker notes that the main reason retailers continue to market and sell outdated products is to cater to shoppers who buy them for nostalgia’s sake, but for all intents and purposes the market has left these products in the dust. So which popular products today will join the likes of VCRs, cassette players and transistor radios in the next few years? MainStreet asked five tech analysts to offer their thoughts on the gadgets that will largely be phased out by the end of this decade.
