Just Two Dragons… Nothing More - GujaratiKanudo

Ok, a fine medieval-looking gal appeared in your widget and you decided to follow the link, thinking there is more to it then just her pretty young looking face. Well, to disappoint you, in a moment or so you’ll realize our pretty guest has seamlessly disappeared, and left us alone with nothing but lonely memory of her.

So I romanticized this article a little, but I’m sure you won’t mind. Either way, concentrate on this Fantasy scene a little deeper, and soon you’ll realize there is “nothing more” then two scary dragons threatening each other (or kissing, as far it concerns me). It really amazed me how well did the artist manage to implement the girl’s face, and then bring it to the the center of attention. We have had some similar attempts before, but most of the time they involved mistakes and were not-so-well integrated.

Those of you who are into tattoos, here’s a nice idea for you. Remember our old friend Greg Grease Lehman? Print this, and head straight to Greg’s tattoo shop! I believe he won’t have anything against illusions like this one! Hehe…

Have you noticed how some of the illusions have evolved? When I saw this picture, somehow it reminded me of a Young Lady or an Old Hag illusion. Wouldn’t it be awesome if this illusion contained another hidden effect, where you could see the lady’s face both as young and as old one? Comment!

Christopher Walken Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

This ubercool Illusion of Christopher Walken flying through space is our newest submission. Believe it or not, this magical “animated” illusion is a composition of only four frames. The second two are just color-inverted originals (with small modification in shiftment from the original). It gives you opinion Chris is drifting through galaxy, while in fact he’s just leaning millimeter back and fourth for our photo-session ;) Another awesome example is “Flying Through City” illusion, as well as “3D Dino” illusion and “Scary Spider” illusion. Slanted Seesaw Optical Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

Now, I really love this one! Larry from Michigan sent me an image I couldn’t miss sharing with you. What we have here is a classic example of “Slanted Lines” illusion, just like the one we published on Monday. The usage of the effect is more advanced this time, since it additionally exploits the nature of the object presented. A seesaw (also known as a teeter-totter or teeter board) is a long, narrow board suspended in the middle. As one end goes up, the other one goes down. When we first see the example below, it looks logical that the right end went down due to heavy triangle positioned on it. The illusion shows just what you naturally expect, but the raw truth is that the seesaw is balanced perfectly horizontal, and doesn’t outweigh – nor left, nor right. You can easily prove this by squeezing your eyes, till you just see the outlines of the seesaw. Thanks for stumbling and sharing this!

Update 1 (02/22/2009): Since yesterday, I have received this enhanced animation from visitor that goes by the name Mr. Anonym. His version might help you in seeing the effect little better. You should be able to spot the moment after which the seesaw gets slanted.

Update 2 (02/22/2009): Alessandro aka SuperSandro sent another example where he modified this illusion. Now the seesaw is actually slanted, but appears perfectly balanced. Here is what Alessandro wrote – “Hi! Today I’m happy to send you this attached file. It’s the same as slanted Seesaw, but rotated for 4 degrees on the rectangle’s side. It seems to be horizontal, but of course it is not.”

Michael Kai’s “This Side Up” - GujaratiKanudo

Michael Kai is a German-born, and Australian-based photographer who won the First International Photographic Art Prize - Arte Laguna back in 2008. Below you can see a sample from his photographic collection, entitled This Side Up. Rest of the collection can be seen in the embedded gallery, just below the tennis court photo. Kai’s photographs look normal at first glance, but look again and you’ll quickly realize he has cleverly tweaked the pictures to disorient the viewer. Even though it’s obvious that these pictures were digitally edited, they still make you wonder if you’re looking at them the right way around. For me personally, it’s hard to distinguish where normal view ends, and upside-down view begins.

Tilit-Shift Quarry Illiusion - GujaratiKanudo

First time I was introduced to tilt-shift photography, was when I discovered Olivio Barbieri’s work. We have even showcased some of his works through this website. I’m not sure if Olivio originally discovered this technique or not, but what I know for sure is what Graham A. Stephen submitted, is equally impressive! Graham’s work should be of great interest to our audience, because the author was kind enough to provide both versions, one including and the other lacking the implemented effect. Check out how the construction site appears in both versions! What I would like to know, is whether this technique can be reversed? Would it be possible to force the miniature replicas to appear bigger (and are the Hollywood studios using this)? Also, can the tilt-shift technique be applied to almost any scenery? So many questions, so many of you to answer them ;D

Psychedelic Optical Illusion Collection - GujaratiKanudo

I’ve been gone for the past two days – occupied with a particular SEO investigation. I’m trying to figure out how domain brokerage works, and see if I could earn a dime along the way. Well, never mind my babbling, let’s better see what has been prepared for us today:

At some point in history I stopped writing about expanding/rotating type of illusions. There were just too many, and all of them were just a slight variation of Akiyoshi Kitaoka’s (psychology professor in Japan) original “Rotating Snakes” illusion. Well, in the meantime my mailbox got cluttered with those, so I decided to bring them up again. There were over 100 of examples, but I have hand-picked only the finest among them (strongest effect). Inside this article you may find six more “Psychedelic” optical illusions, and all of them seem to rotate, expand or shrink if you move your eyes around the picture. Remember, all of them are in fact static images – not animations! Did you like this post? Should I post more? Which example was your favorite? The “Droste Effect” is named after the Dutch Droste company’s famous cocoa packaging in which the nurse on the package carries a plate with a package, on which there is the same package, etc, etc… In a same way following picture is done.

Escher’s Waterfall Brought to Life - GujaratiKanudo

Let me tell you one thing – when you receive exactly the same email from dozen of multiple sources, it means there’s definitely something going on. Luckily nothing bad happened, and it was just another video illusion submission. One I couldn’t ignore, unfortunately. If it wasn’t so complicated extracting those clips, and then optimizing them for articles, they would definitely be my favorite part of this site.

So what’s going on here? One thing about Dutch artist M.C. Escher was his ability to twist our brains with his optical illusions. The “Waterfall”, which was created back in 1961 is an impossible drawing showing what appears to be water running uphill before descending back onto a watermill wheel. You can see how the original looks on paper here. But what if we caught a glimpse of it created in real life? Has McWolles really achieved the impossible? Check the video below to see the physical version of Escher’s Waterfall. It is as if McWolles made one that actually works. Being honest, I just can’t understand where is the catch. Does it have something to do with camera’s angle (it never changes during the video), can it be that CGI was used? It almost gives you brain whiplash just thinking about it!

First time I saw this strange lamp, I wondered how is it possible that it is glowing. Took me few seconds to figure it out. Can you see how this nifty gadget works? There is solution photo inside. It is called Lamp/Lamp and has two screw caps: one real (so it can provide light), and one decorative (to blow people’s minds). I believe that this bulb can be used in any standard lamp base.
