Artistic Pieces from Discarded Computer Parts - GujaratiKanudo

Computers contain so many useful parts and components that can be recycled, reused and re-purposed, that it's a shame to simply throw them away. PC fans make great air filters, mother boards can become jewelry, hard drive platters beautifully turn into clocks and power supplies, and CD drives magically become home made secret safes.

In Which Direction Does It Spin?

In which direction does it spin?
Shown optical illusion just laid there on my hard disk for years. When I opened it today, I couldn’t remember why I placed it in my illusions folder in the first place? After some puzzling, finally I managed to see its visual phenomenon!
Ok, here’s what I want you to do: concentrate on the animated .gif on your right. You’ll quickly realize it represents some sort of see-through sphere, constructed of many dots rotating in one direction. Dots in front make the front face of the sphere, while “background” dots belong to sphere’s back. It’s logical they rotate in opposite directions. Now try and switch those background dots with front-face ones. Notice any change?
If you manage to visualize this, your able to change the direction in which sphere rotates. With some practice, you’ll be able to switch the direction back and forth in very short time fragments. Don’t underestimate yourselves – many individuals have difficulty seeing this type of illusions. It’s not that they’re less worthy, it’s just that their brain operates differently… Which reminded me – did you know that more than 1/3 of all people who went to see Avatar in 3D couldn’t see the image in 3D?
There are many optical illusions of this type available; one of the more popular being Spinning Dancer Optical Illusion. Your best shot of finding more, would be browsing through our Animations category.

Random Illusion Hack! - GujaratiKanudo

You probably noticed a strange ribbon at the top of the page, in the left upper corner, that says “Random Illusion!”. Well, I think it is wonderful add-on for Mighty Optical Illusions. If you click that button, it will take you to one random illusion from our archives of over 1000 illusion articles.

What is so interesting about it, is that you never know what to expect! I couldn’t stop clicking it, and every time the page loaded, I was surprised seeing illusion I forgot I already posted :) I tried this so many times to see if some articles will re-appear twice, but I never managed. Go ahead, test it and if you get some articles re-appear twice, post in comments. I believe this add-on works in all web browsers. I tested it with Firefox and with Internet Explorer, but just in case I would appreciate if you commented your experience with different resolutions and different browsers. Also, I’m interested in your opinion, if the button is too intrusive. I believe all of you will adore it, but if for some reason many of you dislike this option, I shall remove it.

Cosmopolitan Optical Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

Can you detect a hidden “illusion“ in these two photographs? It shouldn’t be too hard, and the illusion is quite similar in both images. It took me few seconds before I figured the cow one, so decided to share with you to test your senses. The only problem with these two, is once you figure them out, there’s no going back. Photoshopped? Most definitely!

Dancing Wind Optical Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

It was a long and busy weekend for me here. Just to keep you informed, I’m thinking of moving my office (where Mighty Optical Illusions website is maintained) to separate location from my own department. So even though there wasn’t much work on the site itself (for the last 3 days), the work being done still involved this site.

Anyway, for today I dug one of the Rob Gonsalves’s surreal paintings we missed posting before. In the same way Rob managed to fluidly transform his Ships into Aqueduct, as well as seamlesly merged Camels with Palm Trees, this time he pulled something simmilar with dancing couples. How many newly wed couples can you count in the picture below? On the other hand, how many pairs of curtains do you see? When you add all the courtains and all the couples together, is the number corresponding to the rel sum of white objects in this painting?

Floating Maze Optical Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

Tom Davison sent in what truly appears to be a great find! Seemingly animated illusions are interesting for what they stand for, but when you take their floating sample and fuse it with something purposeful, then you’re on right tracks to get noticed. For example, take the billboard posters we saw recently. What we have here today is an interesting maze puzzle, spiced with an additional optical illusion obstacle. You can open the picture in full-size to get the stronger effect. Do you notice anything strange when you try to find your way from point S to point E?

Beware The Purple Nurple - GujaratiKanudo

Warning: If the following illusion makes you nauseous or dizzy, please scroll down to the next post.*

The Purple Nurple, as this illusion is called, is what’s known as an anomalous motion illusion (sometimes grouped in with animation optical illusions), whereby a series of shapes and colors creates the appearance of movement while staying completely still. The illusion style was first created, studied and perfected by Professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka, who noticed that certain images appear to move when viewed with your peripheral vision.

The effect is utterly surreal, making the viewer feel as though he or she is on some type of psychedelic drug, even if he or she has never messed with the stuff before. This particular image was created by Walter Anthony.

Coffee Skull Optical Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

Most of our Windows users have downloaded the free “Optical Illusion of The Day” gadget, which is then positioned in corner of their desktops, and shows new optical illusion each day (or two). I’m proud to say by now we have had more than 390,000 downloads of our gadget, and have almost surpassed famous Dilbert! Rest of you who still haven’t tried this widget, be sure to check it out, and by doing so you’ll greatly help us increase our downloads counter. You can also vote by giving it deserved number of the stars, the ratings system similar to our own. Anyways, those of you still interested, but not preferring Windows operating system, be sure to check what else we have prepared for you here. Concerning the illusion for today, no needed to explain – supposedly coffee kills (still not convinced, though).

Octavio Ocampo’s Romeo & Juliet - GujaratiKanudo

Today I’m gonna show you an illusion, I only recently managed to “decode”. Titled Romeo and Juliet, this marvelous painting (created by Octavio Ocampo) managed to fool me for quite some time. What at first appears as profile of both Romeo and Juliet about to kiss, also depicts this famous couple in their early years.
Did you know that Octavio Ocampo is one of Mexico’s most prolific artists? I’m not sure we ever talked about him in details, yet I feel it’s important to know he is very well known for his evocative paintings in which detailed images are intricately woven together to create larger images. This is what Octavio Ocampo terms as metamorphic style. By now you should already be able to recognize illusions we featured, which were done by Ocampo. I’ve added the cropped thumbnail just so that you don’t miss the “hidden” details in this one. The rare full-size original may be seen below.
Now that we covered the important part, let me share some important news. As you see I’m doing some major improvements on this site lately. Unfortunately, not always do things go smooth. Luckily,

Triangle is Only in Your Mind - GujaratiKanudo

Hmm, apparently you weren’t as enthusiastic as I was concerning my previous post. I don’t see why, but I’m an individual, and you are the deciding jury. Those rating stars keep me informed about your likes and dislikes, handy – ayeh? Probably you won’t adore this one neither, but let me tell you that if you stop for second, and think this through the illusion you see today isn’t so bad. It’s obvious, those kiwis are sliced in a way to show a ghost triangle. Our brain is trained to automatically recognize simple objects such as: spheres, triangles and similar. This is why you aren’t really surprised when your brain recognizes the missing triangle. Well, if the brain wasn’t so developed all we would see is 3 slices of kiwi, and some missing parts on them. Think about it. BTW, I’m thrilled that more and more logo pictures appear in our comment section. Also, I found an awesome “adultish” optical illusion for tomorrow… something simmilar to this. Stay tuned!

Ticino Village Optical Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

From the style and motive used in this painting, I presume it was created by famous Sandro Del Prete. It depicts a passageway in Ticino, southernmost canton of Switzerland, which by the way is the only canton where Italian is the sole official language.
I like this one because it’s plain simple, and doesn’t favor none of the two illusory motives it holds. That being said, can you easily switch between old man’s profile and two of the Ticino people? Usually these kind of illusions struggle to push intended (illusory) motive to the front, while the other one is then too much blended with the background, thus making it much harder to see. I find it masterful when both motives have the same weight instead of when artists try to force the illusion!
BTW, how many of you noticed that we surpassed the 100 MILLION VISITOR milestone? I believe we are one of the rare webs that still use the counter (see footer). I’m aware there is zero chance that 100 million different people saw our website, yet makes you wonder how popular we became since our beginning. Enjoy another fine illusion brought to you by Mighty Optical Illusions!

Save The Animals Poster by WWF - GujaratiKanudo

World Wildlife Fund (or just WWF in short) is an organization we mentioned few times in our past. It’s an organization which protects endangered wildlife and environments, tackles climate change and promotes sustainable use of resources. But what WWF also does, it creates one hell of a memorable billboard campaigns. To raise awareness around their cause, they need their message to stand out and differentiate itself from the rest. And what could be better to promote this worthy cause than using a poster with built in game, one that traps you into the world of rainforest wildlife? Not only have I learned one interesting fact today – that rainforests only cover 7% of our planet but harbor more than 50% of the world’s species – I’ve also learned there is pile of hidden animals present in this poster below. Open the picture in full-size (by clicking on it) and see how many hidden animals you can find. Let the games begin!

Flat Green Surface Becomes 3D! - GujaratiKanudo

We’ve seen hundreds of ultra-realistic chalk drawings by now. Over the years artists have truly mastered their craft, pushing the boundaries and making their results more realistic by each iteration. In my opinion, today’s featured illusion has pushed the boundaries even further -by replacing the “chalk” part in “3D chalk drawings” with actual flora (and fauna). Observe how strong the 3D effect appears. It’s almost impossible to visualize the scenery as being what it actually is – flat. I think the original artist has started the whole new trend, and hopefully, we’ll be seeing whole bunch of similar illusions in the near future! The only thing I regret is missing the author’s name. I’ve tried using reverse image search which TinyEye provides (as suggested by my audience), yet without any sucess. If you have any clue about the origins of this photo, also where this installment can be found, please don’t hesitate to share it via comments section!

Update 07/06/2011 – Thanks to our dedicated fans we’ve managed to identify the author behind this monumental achievement. His name is François Abelanet and may find more photos here.

Josh Sommers’ “Escheresques” - GujaratiKanudo

Hey everybody! I found an interesting artist on flickr, and have to admit am really amazed by all of his artwork. Most of the photos he shares are edited in photoshop, but the illusion they produce is usually independent from the digital manipulation. It amazed me when I found out he is the author of our previously posted CG Manipulated impossible structures. Josh Sommers is an amateur photographer, and is happy to share and teach others the techniques he uses. If you are interested in how to do something, feel free to send him a message through flickr. His Equirectangular panoramas, little planets and stereographic projections are all created using Canon Digital Rebel XTi, Canon 10-22mm lens, a Nodal Ninja 3 Tripod head, Hugin, Photoshop and Flexify. He is a Photoshop user since 1993. Below are 3 of his photos that took my attention. If they remind you of Escher, its not coincidence!

Illusion of Many Effects - GujaratiKanudo

Joseph Mohmed created something very simple, yet astonishing. By opening the picture full size, and scrolling up and down very fast, I managed to see a scary black widow spider. This is probably only one effect among dozens. Be careful not to stare at it for too long, or your head may start hurting. You can easily get hallucination effect as well. Let’s give Joseph a chance to describe it:

“I was messing around in Photoshop a long time ago and got this by making a half black/half white canvas and using the twirl filter a bunch. There’s quite a few effects you can get by doing different things, though looking at it is already weird as hell. Try moving your head around while looking in the center, or keeping your eyes in the middle for 15 seconds then looking at a wall and blinking repeatedly. Oh and good job with the website and all that, I got the new widget in my Dashboard”.

Disappearing Dots - GujaratiKanudo

If your eyes follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, you will only see one color – pink. If you stare at the black + in the center, the moving dot turns to green. Now, concentrate on the black + in the center of the picture. After a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating if you’re lucky! It’s amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don’t disappear. This should be proof enough, we don’t always see what we think we see.

Impossible Bottles – Pictures Collection - GujaratiKanudo

Am not sure what’s the name of the artist who does these, but he surely made me wonder! I mean, this wouldn’t be so complicated if you sliced the bottles bottom off and simply insereted all these objects inside, but as I understood he makes them in a regullar way placing everything through bottle’s neck. How is it done? Can someone help me solve this? Oh, and if you have any ideas about the author or his website, post it here so I can give him some credits, because he obviously deserves some! Previously I posted “Impossible Objects no.3″ which you’ll adore if you liked this new post.

New Room to Escape From [GAME] - GujaratiKanudo

Escape The Room GameWhat I bring you today, has very little to do with optical illusions. Still, in order to solve this puzzle, you have to apply your puzzle-solving experience, as well as use your brain extensively. Those of you who follow our website from day one, will remember the original “Escape The Crimson Room” puzzle. I was amazed how well you guys accepted these kind of posts! More important, you did extremely good job solving it!
To be sincere, I played this for half an hour, but then I got stuck with some colorful cubes. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you get your hands dirty. I can give you some tips, but wouldn’t want to ruin this puzzle for others. So the only thing I’m gonna say, is look behind the suitcase and don’t overlook the corners ;) Hope we can solve this one together using our combined powers! If you show some interest towards these kind of posts, I’ll make sure to bring more in the future!

It appears that wherever you stand, this face seem to follow you with it’s eyes. You will get the same impression if you visit Louvre in Paris and look at the famous painting done by Leonardo Da Vinci called Mona Lisa – at least that is what I heard. By the way there are some awesome Mona Lisa illusions on our website… Browse the categories on the left and you’ll find it!

The Cage Triple Illusion - GujaratiKanudo

Today I present you Peter Baker’s work. Open the image full size to see the effect better. This is description Peter provided: “Hi there! Here’s an illusion I created a year or two back, playing with equiluminance to generate a false sense of motion, and foreground background reversal. (And maximising attention by diagonalising the grid.)

I understand the false motion, and the foreground/background flipping, up to a point… but I’m puzzled about an unintended third effect: the zebra worms don’t look straight edged – they seem to be lumpy. Any ideas? And there’s a fourth effect – the edges of the worms seem to be brighter…

As for the title… why ‘The Cage’? On the surface we seem to be caged by either neon tubes (and more distant black and white bars) – or by the zebra worms. But really, we are caged by the fiction our own sensory apparatus presents to us as reality.” Did I mention the 5th effect? This picture really makes you nervous!

Dave Barlow’s World of Impossible Share - GujaratiKanudo

I really much hate it when I’m in a hurry, but need to post an update. “Creative writing” is something that should never be done under pressure. I can’t understand how some writers manage to stay concentrated, while being on a tight schedule from their publishers. Hope I’ll never have to learn this on my own skin. Today I will show you something I should have posted long time ago. Abaroth created these 3d models of impossible structures and explained them like this: “Hi Vurdlak, It’s been a while since I sent Ascending & Descending and the other 2 illusions to you. Here’s the model page from my website – there’s a model of Escher’s Belvedere, and a couple of other new ones, an impossible arch, and a Necker cube. Feel free to use anything you feel is appropriate. All the best. Dave Barlow aka. Abaroth.

Larry the Fox Doesn’t Feel so Clever Anymore - GujaratiKanudo

First of all: HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!! I wish you all the best in 2009, and hope your plans develop as you wanted them to (except you are a super-villain or something… ). As for this website, I wish us many new and prosperous optical illusions, and tons of new visitors to our little community. That was my short intro, and now for the illusion. The picture below was created by Johnny Baboon, who entitled it “Larry the Fox doesn’t feel so clever anymore”. I’m sure you get the title, and can find all the hidden animals in it. At first, only Larry the fox is obvious, but you should easily spot some zebras and pandas as well. But wait, there’s more! Concentrate, and you’ll be able to find many more animals present. How many did you spot? How many are there altogether? This illusion was pointed to us by Chey Whi, who also wrote: “Dear Mighty Optical Illusions, my Sister’s boyfriend loves to shop online, and he has bought me two t-shirts. Both are in fact optical illusions. I think these should be categorized as Spot the Object.”

Unreal Movement Triangles - GujaratiKanudo

This “simple”, yet effective optical illusion was user-created and submitted to me yesterday by our fan, David Cherry. Open it full size, and you’ll get similar effect you already saw in Primrose Field, Moving Letters, Spinning Watermelons, Rotating Beans, Rotating Cogs, Tops, Woodstock, Expanding Cushion… Animations. But also, there is another effect I noticed. The vertical lines seem tilted, while in fact they are perfectly vertical! More inside seemingly bent category.

David’s email: “Hi, I regularly check your site for the latest illusions and seem to have made one of my own… (using fractal software). Look from one section of the pattern to another and they seem to move up and down! The one you look at stays still but the others seem to move, yes? What do you think? Keep up the good work.” David C. Sydney, Australia

Which Way Are They Looking? - GujaratiKanudo

Venezuelan artist Jesus Gonzales Rodriguez creates mind-twisting images by putting together multiple photographs of a person and cutting along the edges. Every image is made up of a frontal and side-view photograph pieced together to form an optical illusion in which the portraits look normal at a glance, but only until your eyes detect the outlying visage. The photos below are part of Rodriguez’s “1/2″ project, which you can check out on his Flickr profile. Pretty impressive work…(still trying to figure out which way they’re facing)
